Republic of Buryatia is located in the southern
part of East Siberia, Transbaikalia.
Industry dominates in the regional economic
structure. Machine building and mining industry are among the basic
ones. Machine building plants are located mainly in the area
of Ulan-Ude.
The largest part of the territory of Buryatia is
characterized by the undeveloped internal communications
infrastructure, by poor rail service, absence of the diversified
asphalt roads network; the air communication is also
complicated.
Principal mode of transportation is a railway.
Airlines connect Ulan-Ude with Moscow, Chita, Irkutsk and other
cities.
Trans-Siberian railway, Baikal-Amur Mainline
(BAM) and three federal highways cross the territory of the
Republic.
Kholodninskoye deposit is located 40 km from BAM,
Ozernoye deposit is located 140 km from Trans-Siberian railway.
Rail mileage in Buryatia totals to 2044 km. Operational length of
highways — about 10 tkm.
One up-to-date airport is functioning in
Buryatia (the International Airport Ulan-Ude). In the framework of
its reconstruction there has been renovated a runway which is
capable to accomodate now almost all types of aircrafts produced in
the world.
The basic productive forces are accumulated in
Ulan-Ude with transport and engineering services, communications,
other infrastructure facilities providing a possibility of economic
growth. They also create conditions for developing transport
communications both with Russia’s regions, and with European and
Southeast Asia countries as well.
Further
development of the Republic of Buryatia
infrastructure
In 2007 the Government of the Republic of
Buryatia adopted the Program of social and economic development of
the Republic Buryatia for 2008-2010 and for the period through
2017.
One of the program main objectives is to set up
a reliable uninterruptible functioning of industrial and social
facilities. To meet this objective realization of some of the large
scale investment projects in the territory of the Republic is
stipulated. Among them are designing and construction of
Moksky hydroelectric complex with 1410 МW capacity, completion of
TPP-2 construction in Ulan-Ude, putting in operation of a
supplementary power system at Gusinoozersk state district power
plant, TPP-1 complex modernization. Moreover, it is supposed
to erect 1700 km power lines network along Baikal Lake coast and to
construct and reconstruct power substations in this zone.
Development of transport infrastructure promotes
the unity of economic space, free movement of goods and services,
as well as natural resources development in the northeast part of
the Republic, creation of conditions for formation of a
transportation and logistics complex and tourism development.
It is supposed to carry out electrification of
the Southern route of Trans-Siberian Railway – Ulan-Ude-Naushki
road with modernization of customs and border service
infrastructure, to construct new international automobile passages
that will allow to increase considerably cargo and passengers
transportation flow.
The Republican government plans to connect BAM
and the Trans-Siberian Railway. Thus, the total load of a new
transport corridor will be provided and BAM’s problems with cargo
transportation will be solved at the same time. The road Ozernoe –
New Uoyan has been included into Russia’s railways development
strategy through 2030.
As for public road system, there will be
continued reconstruction of highways in the central and northeast
parts of Buryatia, in particular Ulan-Ude – Turuntayevo – Kurumkan
highway. In future this road, which has a strategic role for
the Republic, will be extended and will reach BAM’s Uoyan through
Tazy settlement in Kurumkansky district, that will connect the
northern part of Buryatia with all the Republic by the direct motor
way. Construction of the bridge across Vitim River will contribute
to intensification of goods and services movement.
There planned a construction of a bridge over
Dzhida river in Dzhidinsky district and reconstruction of two
highways in this area.
Reconstruction of the international airport of
Ulan-Ude will be continued in the framework of the Federal target
programme «Economic and social development of the Far East and
Transbaikalia through 2013».
Communications and information will be developed
by expansion and modernization of telecommunication networks,
including those along Baikal Lake coast, adoption of new
information technologies. All these will meet requirements of the
population of Republic in electric means of communications and mail
service, Internet, TV-radio broadcasting.
